Vietnam Street Food around Đồng Xuân Alley

So now as you all can see, I’m standing in front of Dong Xuan alley. This tiny alley which has the same name as the famous market is usually known as foodie paradise. So in my hand now is a plate of dried beef salad. So when eating this, the first thing you want to do is to mix everything up. The texture of this is a great combination. You can feel the crunchiness of papaya and carrot and then with the beef jerky, it’s kind of chewy but you can still chew it very easily, and also the peanuts, it brings out the flavour. And I think it’s definitely a must when you come to Hanoi and visit this alley, you should try this.

So the second dish I would like to introduce to you guys is banh bot loc, is usually known as steamed clear tapioca cake. This is usually sold with the dried beef salad, as you can see, inside the fillings of this cake, there is a small shrimp, and this is pork and mushroom, they are minced together. Dong Xuan alley is an inseparable part of this famous market with a range of food and drink stalls. If the market is a place for doing the business, the alley serves eat-and-drink demand. Shop owners, commodity stall owners often come here to take a rest at midday. Hanoi’s best-kept secrets can be found in this alleys. This is the single best lunch spot in the city. So how to eat this? You want to pick it up and then you dip it in the sauce. This sauce is the fish sauce and with some peanuts on the top, and then you try it. Squeezing down the alleyway, there is a dimly-lit stall that is famous for a less traditional cuisine, and it is “Phở tíu”, or mixed pho with pork. So as you can see, inside this bowl, we have some pho noodles, blanched over boiling water and then added to the bowl. And then on the top of the bowl, you can see some yellow sliced pork which has been sprinkled on top, some herbs, and then some dried onions, and then some crushed peanuts. As you can probably guess, peanuts is a very essential of Vietnamese cuisine. I think that’s pretty much it, and when you eat this, if you’re a spicy food lover you also need to put some chilli sauce on the top. And all you have to do is to mix it well. This very thin slice of lean meat is very tender, it’s not too dry but also very juice at the same time. And one last thing you cannot miss when you visit Dong Xuan alley, is “chè. Especially in winter time, this is “che troi nuoc” or “bánh trôi nước”. This is glutinous rice balls, with the ginger syrup. and as you can see on the top, they have already chopped some peanuts, And let’s see what is inside this rice ball okay? So as you can see the fillings of this rice ball is some sort of mung bean paste which is very creamy, and it has coconut smell as well. This glutinous rice ball has a very addictive soft chewy texture. The filling inside is not too sweet, and the combination of chewy skin and creamy fillings inside is pure heaven, especially on this cold winter days like this and the ginger, you cannot miss the ginger in winter. So For those of you who are currently staying in Hanoi or living in this beautiful city, have you tried eating in this tiny alley? so If you have, don’t forget to leave a comment down below, let us know what you thought of them. And for those of you who are planned to visit Hanoi in the very near future, don’t forget to stop by this busy tiny lane and try all the delicacies of Hanoi.
